High Fructose Corn Syrup Eliminated

Jason’s Deli eliminated High Fructose Corn Syrup from their food in 2008. They had already eliminated trans-fat and MSG and pride themselves in serving up healthy, organic, tasty salads, sandwiches and soups all across America.     i work at jasons and we have a vegie sandwitch with no meat. we also have a build your own with only vegie options as well as meat. also our salad bar and we have some vegie soups and you can get any of our salads with no meat.

    Rusty,
    I used to enjoy your restaurant. The food is good. But if you’re going to put down a large segment of the food industry, we have darkened your doors for the last time. I will make sure and tell all my customers in KC as well and all colleagues, friends and family, that you are out to get the food industry. I happen to be that HFCS salesman that you make fun of in your blog. That along with 2000 other ingredients allows me to make a living and provide for my family. Yes, we do eat food with preservatives, acidulants, phosphates, sweeteners, etc. And so do 99% of Americans. Funny how the average age of lifespan continues to rise. We have the safest food supply in the world. Maybe you should visit third world countries that have “natural” food covered with dung and insects, and then see how good we have it. You have a very skewed view of the food supply my friend. And you’ve enjoyed my dollars for the last time. Feel free to email me if you’d like to discuss.

    By the way, you do realize that HFCS and sugar are nearly chemically identical right. So until you eliminate sugar from your restaurant, I don’t see why it would matter that you’ve eliminated HFCS. Years ago sugar was the evil word, and that’s why HFCS got introduced into the soda industry.

    I recently watched the PBS documentary “King Corn” and was shocked and disgusted at how high fructose corn syrup has invaded our foods. It is difficult to find any products not made from either some form of corn or high fructose corn syrup. THANK YOU for providing my family a healthy place to eat out.

    On a side note, I am gluten intolerant and would absolutely LOVE for Jason’s Deli to begin offering some GF choices beyond salads only. Maybe soup or sandwiches? The only place we eat out at is at Jason’s Deli. In fact, they know us very well at our local restaurant :)

    We eat a Jason’s Deli because it is about the only restaurant that is trying to make food healthy.

    I would like to see lower sodium soups and keep the soft drinks out of the restaurant. The reason high fruit corn syrup is so bad is that people consume too much in soft drinks. It is only empty calories. I see so many people go back for refills more than 3 times. Children under 10 should not even be drinking so many at dinner time. They need milk.

    I subscribe to the Nutrition Action Letter and I think if more people would read their magazine, they would realize that they can live a healthy life by their own means.

    To live long and unhealthy is not the way to go. I would rather die young and healthy so that I don’t have the misery.

    Please remove ALL High Fructose Corn Syrup from Jasons products. I know you’ve reduced it in foods but please eliminate it from the drinks took. Jason Greenfield is unwittingly selling what the Univ CA at San Francisco says is a toxin – fructose – that causes obesity, hypertension, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.     Jason G, I appreciate your comment as a mom and an RD I know you are correct and I would like to clear up a few misconceptions noted above. We are trying to blame the food industry for our inability to keep our kids at a healthy weight. I agree we do need to be mindfull of what we and our kids are eating and look for the most healthful options we have that FITS A BUDGET. I know for a fact that organic does not define a more healthy product and you can’t clasify a food as hormone free, because most foods naturally contain hormones(read the statement on the label) most of the confusion is due to marketing and activists not science. As a food and health expert I appreciate the notion of providing healthy options like apples instead of fries and milk instead of soda, but as a parent I make those decisions for my child, they choose how much and what new foods to try. It comes down to balance, anything we eat needs to be in moderation as commented by Linda about over consuming soda. I believe in having choices that is why I like Jason’s deli but do not appreciate the activist approach to healthful food.

    I am mildly allergic to corn syrup and things made from corn (which is most preservatives and many dyes, as well as “artificial flavors” derived from corn). I REALLY appreciate your wanting to ban HFCS from food but I am not sure about your deli meats…many times deli meats have “corn syrup solids” in them (most processed meats do-just check the package). Does Jason’s deli have corn-syrup-free meat as well? (most hams in other delis are full of corn syrup). I have to make most of my food from scratch and I would love be able to eat out again! I plan to work of the nerve and try your restaurant soon. I hope the best for your company because I appreciate your efforts!

    Jason’s is doing good things. However….you are missing a big health item in many of your items…..and that is salt content. Look at how high the percent of salt is in each of your menu items.

    Like Diane, my family has sensitivities to corn and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is a very concentrated form of corn. My husband has severe migraines from corn and especially HFCS. I’m sure Jason’s deli folks are aware of other issues regarding this product. I’ve read that our climb in incidence of obesity and diabetes in the US began as manufacturers replaced sugar with HFCS.
    My only request is that the Jason’s in our area (that used to have soft drinks that did not have HFCS in them) go back to having a couple of them available again-maybe a root beer and an orange because it was so much fun for my husband to be able to go out and have a soda that was sweetened with sugar.
    Just a personal request. Bring back a couple of corn free sodas here in Austin. Keep the others if you feel the need. We’d even pay a little more, if needed.
    Thanks, by the way, for getting the HFCS out of your other products and for offering gluten free bread. It’s great to have a place to eat out (plus I grew up near Beaumont)-Love you guys-great gumbo-just like home.

    I do not envy you.
    I appreciate what you are trying to do and realize that ours is not a perfect world.
    Cured meat is typically made with all the ingredients that folks want you to get rid of and that also give the Corned beef and Pastrami its great taste.
